Modified SHAM and HOD prescriptions for the galaxy-halo connection

Abstract: The Sub-Halo Abundance Matching (SHAM) and the Halo Occupation Distribution (HOD) are the most popular techniques used to connect galaxies to their host dark matter haloes and model the galaxy clustering cosmological probe. While HOD is an analytic prescription depending only on the halo mass and a number of parameters, SHAM is directly built on the observed galaxy sample. Therefore, to be reliable and accurate, SHAM has to incorporate the major incompleteness effects of the data sample considered, as well as the evolution of its galaxy number density with redshift. Past surveys, as SDSS or SDSS-III/BOSS, mostly targeted luminous red galaxies (LRGs) at low redshifts, providing highly complete samples easy to model with a standard SHAM. The next generation of large-scale structure surveys will observe different populations of galaxies, the so-called "multi-tracers", out to high redshifts, with different levels of completeness. I will discuss how the standard SHAM model needs to be modified in order to accurately reproduce the clustering signal of incomplete galaxy samples as a function of their galactic properties.
